So WHY GO RED?
- 1 in 3 women die of heart disease or stroke
- 80% of heart disease is preventable
- More research is needed to increase knowledge about prevention and treatment of heart disease in women
- Women need to be educated to recognize symptoms of heart disease and act on getting treatment (including calling 9-1-1)
Countless times as a nurse I have given phone advice regarding medical care of a child and at the end of the call I have reminded the mom to be sure to find time to take care of herself (take a shower, cry, or take a walk), even if it was only 10 minutes. I would remind them that we are better moms when we take care of ourselves.
When I quit working full time, I was struck with the reality that it had been too long since I had listened to my own advice and taken care of myself – I was mentally, physically, and spiritually exhausted. I have spent the last 20 months getting healthier in all of these ways and realize that because of this work I now have more energy for others.
When I think about women and healthcare, particularly heart health, I realize that we get so busy as wives, daughters and moms that we lose perspective on how we are really doing and what our own needs are. We are not good advocates for ourselves and don’t always push for answers when our symptoms are “atypical” or there isn’t a clear diagnosis or treatment plan. If we don’t take care of ourselves we risk not being able to take care of others.
Why do I go red? Women's Health is why!!
I have kicked things off with a $250.00 donation...Join me in my goal of raising $2000.00 to increase research and education for women’s heart health.
