In recent years, loss of life from heart attacks and strokes have hit home for me. From my company’s founder at the age of 83 to one of my favorite artists on N. Mississippi who was 42 -- it felt like both of these talented men left this world too soon. Although my grandmother and great-grandmother lived into their 80s, both of their deaths were also heart- and stroke-related.
Cardiovascular health is important for men and women to understand for themselves and for the people they love. Last week at the Go Red For Women Luncheon, I heard that one woman dies from heart disease or stroke in the U.S. every 80 seconds. I was surprised that this figure is higher than all forms of cancer combined. There was a light at the end of the tunnel at the event: 80 percent of heart disease and stroke may be prevented by lifestyle changes and education.
For yourself, your living family members, and for friends and family we have lost to heart disease and stroke over the years -- please consider helping me reach my $1,500 fundraising goal in support of the American Heart Association’s mission, reached through education, research and treatment to mitigate the impact of this preventable disease.
I think we can all relate to areas in our personal lives and world events that make us feel that we can’t control or influence outcomes. And I suspect everyone knows someone who has had a heart or stroke event this year. I have kicked things off with a $500 donation, and encourage you to consider a gift that is meaningful to you. There are many important causes and needs out there right now but I hope you are able to expand your generosity to support this one as well. Thank you for your consideration!
